Itinerary
We’ll take you to four communities that travellers seldom visit and the highlight of Together we can is the genuine interaction you will experience, the shared experiences you will uncover and the stories and laughter which – will follow you each day as your interact with grassroot communities.
Help at a Soup Kitchen
Getting involved in helping disadvantaged communities is both an opportunity to engage with local people and a rewarding way for travellers to contribute to alleviating the problems of poverty in Kenya. Today you visit a children’s centre on the outskirts of Nairobi supported by One Horizon, which provides the kids with their only regular meal each day. You lend a hand by helping to prepare and distribute nutritious food, and in return will receive beautiful, happy smiles and witness firsthand how communities work together to help the hungry and most vulnerable.
They Said It Can’t Be Done
Spend an incredible day with some amazing Kenyan women who have managed to overcome the most difficult challenges that life can bring. You will visit the Women’s Empowerment Centre where local women in the area undertake an 18-month program that teaches them lifestyle, trade and entrepreneurial skills so they can set up their own businesses. The experience of meeting these determined and resourceful women will allow you to walk away with a new perspective on how teaching empowerment and skills can lift people out of poverty to support and keep families together.
Grandmothers Love Their Pigs
Today you will visit another local community to meet some of the endearing and entrepreneurial Kenyan grandmothers who play a vital role in raising their grandchildren and providing a home and meals to many generations in their family. Visit a local grandmother’s pig farm and discover how pig-husbandry provides food and financial support and the bio-gas system creates energy out of the waste to power a home. Sit with the grandmothers and listen to their powerful stories of how they broke the cycle of poverty in between some joyful singing and dancing and a cup of local tea, and on this inspirational day you learn how resilient people can be.
Become a Maasai for the Day
Venture into rural Maasai country where you will meet a family and immerse yourself in the midst of the daily hustle and bustle of Maasai village life. Your host will be one of the village elders, an heir to his clan, and you meet his wife and children too. The male children of the family are young morans, the traditional defenders of the tribe. Learn about their traditional rites of passage while also discovering the intricacies of the Maasai family structure. An amazing day where you will get the chance to become an honorary Maasai, learn how to throw a traditional spear and the techniques needed to survive in the bush.

An Amazing Day. Carol and the driver from One Horizon picked me up along with two other travelLers and then we headed to the Masai village. The ride was comfortable and we talked the entire way. When we arrived to the village, we were greeted and treated like family. The women spoke very little English so our guides were there to interpret. Their stories of survival were inspiring. They taught us how to make simple beaded bracelets and we shared a meal with them. Dress comfortably because you will be walking amongst hills and cattle. They also sell their goods. Their prices are very affordable and is their way of supporting themselves. BOOK THIS TOUR!

My husband and I couldn’t have had a better time during our visit. The women we met were very empowering and inspirational. It was so neat getting to hear their story of how they got to where they are now. From building their own homes to making jewellery and other accessories they truly are strong women! Getting to see where they live and what they do was very humbling, and we were so gracious they opened up their day to spend with us and allow us in their home.

So i decided to experience Africa first hand… with the Masai tribe. It was one of my best days in Nairobi!!!! So similar yet continents apart. Hence my brothers and sisters an ocean or two away. We always think we are going through a hard time in life… what we thought we are experiencing is not even a portion of their daily struggle. And yet those beautiful smile still shines through them, it just made my day amazing! I was told about a partnership with One Horizon. It is indeed a good way to help the community. Aside from that I have Solomon as my guide and translator. He is amazing! And full of passion. Explaining to me how things and the trip will work. So, I don’t have funny surprises after that. It is actually a good way to learn another culture. Water and snacks provided is also a way to go!! Thanks so much for the fun day.
