Become an Honorary Maasai
Begin the day with a drive into the magnificent Maasai heartland where you will be met by one of the Maasai village elders, Daniel. He will take you on a tour of the lands during the daily cattle drive and educate you on how his ancestors managed these precious lands for centuries. Later learn about some of the local plants used to make ancient remedies that have helped the Maasai survive in the bush for so many years. Enjoy a local cup of tea over a cultural exchange as warriors describe various aspects of their fascinating culture. Learn how to throw a traditional spear and climb an acacia thorn tree to escape danger. In the afternoon you will spend some time with the woman of the tribe and discover how to weave the frame of a new manyatta.
One Horizon Team Dinner
We always have a lot of fun at dinner and it’s a great opportunity to download all your questions from your day with the Masai and prepare for tomorrow’s venture back to Masai country.
Maasai Life In Focus
Begin the day by learning the traditional welcome with some singing and dancing. Meet a young Maasai warrior, a village elder and some women of the tribe to get an understanding of life in their society from different perspectives. Your host for the day has 52 siblings and his father has 6 wives, a starkly different world to the one we know. Use the time to get to know your host and ask the questions you wish to have answered. Enjoy the humour and warm nature of the villagers as you discover that they are just as interested in your life as you are in theirs. Later enjoy a traditional Maasai lunch after some more dance lessons and then head out to help some of the community members finish the manyatta build. Sit with the woman and learn how to make some traditional jewellery and receive a memento as a reminder of your time with the tribe.

A Life Changing Experience Recently my husband and I spent two weeks in Kenya as part of a group tour. Having been obsessed with the Maasai from a young age he knew he wanted to spend some one on one time with a local family and do something to give back to the local community. One Horizon was the perfect opportunity. We selected the Maasai Magic tour and were picked up at our hotel by our guides. We drove for about 45 minutes and arrived at the home of Daniel, his wife Rispa and their son Emmanuel. They could not have been more warm and welcoming. We spent time with them as a family exploring the property and learning about their lives, but we also spent time with each individually chatting and asking questions about a herding life in Kenya. We sat with Rispa and made our own (very basic) beaded bracelets. We enjoyed a light snack and also had the opportunity to purchase some of Rispa's beadwork and crafts. Not only did we support the family but they were WAY more affordable than anywhere else on our trip. STOCK UP WHILE YOU ARE THERE! One Horizon was responsive during our planning, one time for our pick up, a wealth of information during our travel to meet the family and the vehicle was clean and comfortable. We could not have asked for a more amazing experience.
I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for an incredible two days! The trips were beyond incredible and inspiring. Carol was a fantastic guide - very knowledgeable and welcoming. I can't wait to share my experience with everyone back home and also look forward to sharing the photos she took. I hope to accomplish something as profound as you have, in my coming years! You’ve affected change to so many, it's truly incredible.
Another inspirational day - A unique African experience in a traditional Masai village What an incredible day spent with this traditional Maasai family. They shared their stories and I listened with tears in my eyes. We spent the morning with Daniel and his son Emanuel. Daniel has 50 siblings!!! Emanuel explained the cultural journey from boyhood to manhood and his mother, later in the day, shared her experience. The practice of circumcision continues today. It is a day I will remember forever and their stories will remain in my heart. Caroline, our guide also shared her remarkable story. The work done by One Horizon is nothing short of life changing for these people. I would recommend anyone travelling to Nairobi to be a part of one of these experiences. The money paid for these trips go into the program.
This was hands down one of the highlights of our incredible trip to Kenya. My mother, my 6-year-old daughter and I were picked up at our hotel by Solomon and taken to a Maasai community in the Ngong Hills. We spent a wonderful afternoon with a local family, hearing about their lives, dancing, and learning to make beaded jewelry (or at least attempting). They were very warm and welcoming, and it felt like we made a genuine connection despite the vast cultural differences. We also got to hear about the inspiring work that One Horizon is doing in the Maasai community. I cannot recommend this highly enough!
