Overview

This experience is part of the My Maasai Life Series. An amazing insight and education into the life of Maasai people. And this insight is from the perspective of the Maasai themselves.

To maximise the time in the community you will be transported there by helicopter and with your own private guide. The journey there will give you an incredible view of the landscapes that are part of Kenya and you will land adjacent to the village. And at the end of the day, you will spend the night in a homestead that you will have for your exclusive use. And your personal chef will prepare your dinner and breakfast. An amazing homestead property with views of the mountains around you.

On your first day you will be meeting Yiasire who has recently married. As a young Maasai women, there was enormous pressure on her to take a husband. So, in August of 2021 she married a young Maasai man and that meant leaving her home and village and moving to her husband’s village to start a new life. For her, that meant taking on some of the responsibilities and expectations of her in-laws and the wider community. Herding goats, fetching water, and helping with daily tasks would dominate her day. And, as time goes on, she will be expected to have children and contribute to life in the village. This tour will be an incredible insight into Maasai life from a young women’s perspective.

itinerary

A Spectacular Helicopter Flight

You will begin the day with a spectacular helicopter journey. The flight will take you towards Ngong before flying down to where you host, and her family live. This short flight of 20 – 30 minutes will give you an outstanding view not only of Nairobi but of the amazing landscapes along the way. This flight is exclusively for you and/or your party and will be something you will talk about for years to come.

You Are Met by Your Host

Upon entering the village, you will receive a traditional song and dance welcome. It’s a great introduction to Maasai life which is told in song and the rhythm and beat of their music is infectious.

Being Dressed as a Maasai

Being dressed as a Maasai for your day is also part of the experience and you will also be adorned with the gender specific adornments that the Maasai are well known for. And with a traditional Shuka (blanket) around your shoulders it will complete your transformation for this amazing day.

Sitting Down with Your Host in Her Manyatta

In your hosts home and in this very traditional setting you will hear, talk about, and participate in open discussions about life for Yiasire. The discussion will cover:

  • The rights of passage that she went through (and that every Maasai women go through) and what she felt at each stage. And for her future children, will it be the same or will those rights of passage change?
  • Who was involved in the choice of a husband – who participated in the decision making?
  • What it feels like when a dowry is negotiated between the families, how the process is done and the tensions that arise and why they arise? And how are they resolved?
  • The actual marriage ceremony and the ritual, customs, and practices which she had to go through both before and on her wedding day.
  • What it was like moving to a new village of people she didn’t know and the expectations of her in-laws and the challenges that it presented.

An Amazing Homestead and Your Own Chef

Your overnight accommodation is 10 minutes from the Maasai village where you have spent the day. This amazing 4 bedroom, all on-suite property has spectacular views over the nearby mountains. It’s the perfect place to relax for the evening and to enjoy the views and where you will have dinner. And to make it a memorable day, you have the services of your own chef who will prepare your dinner as you relax. You have the entire property for you exclusive use.

A Twilight Visit

And before you sit down for dinner you have one last treat for the day. You will be visited at twilight by a group of Maasai singers from the local tribe who will give you a 20-minute rendition of melodious songs. These songs capture the essence of the Maasai.

Dine, Wine and Relax Some More

And when all the singing is done, your dinner awaits. It’s time to kick back and relax with a glass of wine in hand and where your time is your own.

Day 2 (afternoon) A Community Visit to Entrepreneurial Grandmas

On your way back to your hotel (The Western Hotel) you will visit a project that is turning around the lives of grandmas in a local community. You meet some engaging and entrepreneurial grandmothers who are beating their generational cycle of poverty. Many Kenyan grandmothers play a vital role in raising their grandchildren and extended families, and you’ll visit a pig farm, which is a project supported by One Horizon and travellers like yourself to improve the livelihoods of grandmothers by empowering them through small-scale farming. They invite you to assist with farming activities, join in some joyful singing and dancing over a cup of local tea or chai, and by sharing lots of laughter and listening to their inspirational stories, you'll get a real insight into the strength and resilience of these remarkable Kenyan women.

Another inspirational day - A unique African experience in a traditional Masai village What an incredible day spent with this traditional Maasai family. They shared their stories and I listened with tears in my eyes. We spent the morning with Daniel and his son Emanuel. Daniel has 50 siblings!!! Emanuel explained the cultural journey from boyhood to manhood and his mother, later in the day, shared her experience. The practice of circumcision continues today. It is a day I will remember forever and their stories will remain in my heart. Caroline, our guide also shared her remarkable story. The work done by One Horizon is nothing short of life changing for these people. I would recommend anyone travelling to Nairobi to be a part of one of these experiences. The money paid for these trips go into the program.
