Overview

One Horizon's tours for people living with a health issue are for people who may be physically challenged by various conditions. Our small group tours are supported by an amazing team of individuals. We appoint a travel buddy for each our guests whose presence is to ensure our guests enjoy every moment of their holiday and who are there to assist. And our commitment is for our guests to have amazing experiences.

Wildlife and People Experiences in a Complete Package

Our Experience Kenya tour combines some great wildlife experiences as well as meeting the real gems of Kenya, its people. We make this tour attractive to people who may have some reservations about travelling because of a pre-existing health condition. And we make it attractive to our guests by teaming them with a One Horizon staff member who becomes their travel buddy. The travel buddy is our guest’s personal concierge, somebody who can see to our guests every need. And we have arranged our tours so that our guests minimise their daily travel times to the various experiences. And while our group size is restricted to 5, we also have a support vehicle that carries all our necessary items for the day, whether that is wheelchairs, walkers and even blankets.

People and Community – a cultural and social purpose adventure

This tour includes inspiring cultural experiences visiting four grassroots Kenyan communities that tourists rarely have a chance to meet. You will see life from a different perspective with a social purpose aspect of your holiday and one you will find incredibly rewarding and satisfying. You can help at a local soup kitchen, meet the strong and courageous women at a vocation and lifestyle training centre, and be inspired by some entrepreneurial Kenyan grandmothers. This experience will leave you humbled and heartened, and you will finish this experience by spending time with the Maasai and learn about their fascinating way of life that hasn’t changed for centuries.

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is renowned for its work rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned baby elephants. The Nursery is where an orphan's journey begins - a journey that will culminate, years down the line, in their reintegration back into the wild.

From 11am to 12pm, you will spend an unforgettable hour with the nursery herd. Keepers are on-hand to introduce you to each of the elephants, sharing their unique rescue stories and explaining the threats facing elephants. Funds from your visit help support the rescue and rehabilitation of the orphaned elephants.

One Horizon’s Women Centre (11 -1pm)

You will spend a half day visit on your community adventure with some amazing Kenyan women who have managed to overcome the most difficult challenges that life can bring.

You will visit a Women's Empowerment Centre where local women in the area undertake an 18-month program that teaches them lifestyle, trade and entrepreneurial skills so they can set up their own businesses.

Mamba Village – Nairobi’s Crocodile Farm (10.15 – 11.30am)

The name Mamba is Swahili for crocodile. This is home to around 70 Nile crocodiles that are known to be the largest of the crocodile species and the most dangerous. There are five crocodile pens in the farm.

The Nile crocodiles are very aggressive. They are grouped into families and have been given names. Peter is the eldest of them all and is 24years old. The young crocodiles are between 9-18 years and are kept separate from the adult crocodiles. These helps keep them safe as older crocodiles can at times turn on the younger crocodiles.

Kazuri Beads (12.00 – 1 pm)

Kazuri beads is a fair trade success story in Nairobi that dates back to 1975, when it was founded. Kazuri was the brainchild of Lady Susan Wood, who was born to English parents in Africa. She began with two local women who made ceramic beads by hand – the word “kazuri” means “small and beautiful” in Swahili – and soon realized she could expand and help many more unemployed women.

Today, Kazuri employs more than 300 women, makes over five million beads a year, and exports beads to 20 different countries. The women have also begun to make other pottery goods with the same colourful designs.

Lunch: (1.30 – 3.00 pm) The area of Karen which you will be visiting today has many little boutique cafes which we will retreat to for a great meal and conversation

A day is spent at the lodge enjoying all the sights of the natural landscape from the grounds of the lodge. But before arriving at Sopa the first stop is the magnificent Rift Valley Lookout where you stop to take in the incredible views of the Rift Valley. And from there it’s down to the lake which is the second largest freshwater lake in Kenya and the home of many hippos. Lake Naivasha is at the highest elevation of the Kenyan Rift valley at 1,884 metres (6,181 ft).

Your host is one of the village elders, an heir to his clan, and you will meet his wife and children as well. The male children of the family are young morans, the traditional defenders of the tribe.

You will learn about their traditional rites of passage while also discovering the intricacies of the Maasai family structure. An amazing day where you will get the chance to become an honorary Maasai, and see a demonstration of the techniques needed to survive against predators.

You and the gang where great and went above and beyond

Being in Kenya was amazing. Full of wonderful people. You and the gang where great and went above and beyond. It was more of a holiday than work. You are an inspiration and would love to come visit and help you out sometime. What really warmed my heart was the fact you have charities such as Go Granny. And helping those poor women who have been disowned by their families. Such an eye opener and a trip I will never forget. Thank you and the team for being amazing and for being able to adapt to all situations.

What a fantastic and professional team of dedicated people

I recently travelled to Kenya and had the pleasure of meeting the Director and his dedicated team. I was met at the airport by the lovely Solomon, who gave me the best welcome to Africa. Unfortunately, the tour operator in the UK had not informed One Horizon that I was a wheelchair user. After a bit of a struggle, I managed to get into the vehicle. The following morning the One Horizon team arrived at the hotel and within less than 24 hours two wooden ramps and a step appeared so that I and my fellow travel companions were able to access the vehicle. The whole team were on hand to assist for the duration of the holiday. And what a holiday, we experienced the real Africa in all its challenges and its resilient people. We went to several projects that One Horizon sponsor and support. What an eye opener. I can't express how much I would recommend that you book with One Horizon, you will have the best experience. I can't wait to return and this time I will book direct with One Horizon. Thank you One Horizon, hope to see you all again soon.

I cannot rate Colin and his team highly enough. They provided a ten day tour for a group of us with disabilities, but overcame hurdles we encountered effortlessly and professionally. They provided total support for the whole holiday experience and ensured everyone had a fantastic time. I would highly recommend them to anyone wanting to go on a tour to Kenya.
